Glass is a unique material that is physically and practically flexible. Glass is a chemically neutral material and can be manufactured in a variety of ways. It has been used throughout human history since before 2000 BC. It started in Mesopotamia and has become more common over thousands of years.

Despite being very popular in our modern times, glass can be found in many forms in nature. Modern glass may be mostly artificial, but the natural beauty and strength of natural glass is undeniable. Despite all of this, it is difficult to determine the strength of glass, especially because scientists often claim that glass is a state of matter rather than a single type of material.

Obsidian, perhaps the most well-known type of natural glass, is formed when a sudden hit of water or air causes the melted rock to cool rapidly. Many people recognize obsidian for its distinct black lustre, but in rare cases it may have snowflake-like spots on its surface or an iridescent lustre.

Obsidian occurs naturally all around the world, essentially wherever a volcanic eruption occurs.Obsidian can be commonly found when hiking near volcanic areas from Argentina to the United States, but amazingly surprising areas include Japan and Scotland. The natural beauty of this glass makes it an attractive ornament.

Obsidian rock is extremely rich in silica, around 65-80 percent, and low in water. Its extrusive formation happens through the quick cooling of felsic lava on the edges of a felsic lava flow or volcanic dome or when lava cools after coming into sudden contact with water or air. However, the intrusive formation takes place when felsic lava cools along the edges of the dike.

The most common colour of obsidian is Black. Due to the presence of iron oxide, it can also be found in brown, green and tan shades. In the rarest of cases, obsidian can be blue, red, orange or yellow in colour.

The main uses of obsidian were, manufacturing, cutting and piercing tools and weapons such as knives, arrowheads, spear points and scrapers. The different colours it is found in, makes this rock an alluring ornament and a semi- precious stone.

THE SUBSEQUENT SHIFT FROM NATURAL TO MAN-MADE GLASS

Archaeological evidence shows that natural glass, such as obsidian, has been used by humans for a long time. Synthetic glass and glaze were made dating back to human history. The earliest known glaze (glass coating) dates back to around 12000 BC. The earliest solid glass was around 7000 BC; Both were found in Egypt and remained the centre of glass and glaze production throughout ancient history. Initially, glass was used only for decorative purposes, but was later moulded or pressed into a container. The invention of blown glass around the 1st century BC. In BC, the use of glass increased significantly for practical purposes in Roman times, mainly for ships and later for windows. In Europe, after the fall of the Roman Empire, glassmaking was scattered in isolated areas, but continued in the Byzantine Empire (especially Syria) and by Arabs in Syria, Egypt and Persia. Venice had become the centre of the revived glass industry in Europe since about 1300.The development of art paralleled the Renaissance of the 15th century, and the most important advancement in Venice was the production of clear, colourless glass called Crystallo. This glass made Venice a major centre for glass manufacturing and glass exports by the 17th century, expanding throughout Europe, especially in Bohemia, Nuremberg and the United Kingdom.

GLASS FROM 7000 TO 3000 B.C.

The history of glass does not begin in Mesopotamia, where there are master craftsmen from the 3rd millennium BC. Discover how to make glass. Glass occurs naturally. Quartz sand melts at very high temperatures and forms glass when the melted mass cools. “Solidified liquid”, that’s glass. Lightning causes such high temperatures, but so do the effects of volcanic eruptions and meteorites. In this way, fulgurite, obsidian and tektite vitreous rocks are formed. As early as the Neolithic around 7000 BC, people used glass as a tool. They recognized the excellent properties of naturally formed glass rocks. For example, they used the sharp edges of obsidian to make wedges and scrapers.

GLASS AFFAIRS OF 1500 B.C.

Around 1500 BC, the Egyptians made the first hollow glass containers for ointments and oils. The oldest dated glass objects can be seen in Munich’s Egyptian art collection. Delicate glass made of pale blue glass.

ASSURBANIPAL’S GLASS RECIPE OF 658 B.C.

The library of Assyrian King Ashurbanipal contains the first glass recipe written: “Bring me 60 sand, 180 seaweed ash, and 5 chalk.” Dating back to 658 BC, this formula was unparalleled for 2500 years. Quartz sand, potassium and lime produce a natural, impermeable, malleable and durable raw material that is glass.

PREAMBLE OF A TECHNOLOGICAL REVOLUTION IN 100 B.C.

Around 100 BC, a technological revolution took place in a glass blower hut off the coast of Syria. Today we don’t know his name, but the glass blower invented the blower tube. It consists of a tube 1.2 to 1.6 m long with a mouthpiece at one end. At the other end, a glass blower takes a mass of molten glass and twists, shakes, rolls and blows air into the cooling mass. Since then, glassblower has been able to produce all kinds of thin wall glass. 100 years later, in the Roman Empire, luxurious glasses with colourful decorations were already being produced.

11TH CENTURY’S CENTRE OF GLASSMAKING: VENICE

Since the 11th century, Venice has been the centre of glass production in the Western world. The local glass workshop “phioleri di Murano” has reached unimaginable levels of craftsmanship, especially in the production and processing of clear crystals, and has developed an elegant Renaissance glass style within the Venetian glassmaking tradition.

“PRINCIPLE OF CROWN GLASS” FROM 12TH CENTURY

There are several examples of how the Egyptians were able to make window panes, but it was the discovery of the principle of crown glass that finally brought light to Gothic-era castles and cathedrals. Glassblowers press a piece of glass into a flat disk and use lead to connect the central parts to form a large area.

MAJOR GLASS EVENTS FROM 1688 TO 1925

In the French city of Saint-Gobain, glassblowers first poured molten glass onto a table and rolled the molten mass until it was the same thickness. It was ideal for nobles to make mirrors to decorate their Rococo palaces.

In 1867 Friedrich Siemens introduced the continuous melting furnace, a technological innovation that accelerated the industrialization of the glass industry. This tank furnace still consists of a smelter and working parts, working day and night non-stop. This was a milestone in the mechanical production of glass containers.

American Michael J. Owens invented a masterpiece of engineering, the fully automatic bottle-blowing machine. It used a suction and blow process. In other words, a piece of glass is sucked into the mould and cut automatically. This miracle machine was able to produce 2,500 bottles per hour.

In 1925, engineers Ingle and Smith applied for a patent on the IS machine. Hollow glass, a production method still used today, is produced by the blow and blow process. The drops are pre-blown in a metal mould and then the pre-formed drops are transferred to a second mould where the blow is complete..

GLASS IN THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD

It was the introduction of electronically controlled machines that increased the production of glass manufacturers in the second half of the 20th century. A new lightweight glass manufacturing process helps protect the environment and conserve energy sources. Glass is an essential part of our lives. Used in research, communication technology, construction and solar systems. Glass is an ideal packaging material for beverages, food and cosmetics.

Why Transparent Glass Packaging Works? https://www.teknomartecommerce.com/blog/why-should-you-pack-your-product-in-transparent-glass-bottles-glass-jars/ Thu, 29 Oct 2020 06:35:12 +0000 https://www.teknomartecommerce.com/blog/?p=1973 In the packaging industry, an emerging trend is that  nowadays, customers, across all age groups value an ability to see the product for themselves and pay less attention to the description of the product on the pack.

Packing your product in transparent material such as glass can definitely subvert the attention of the customers towards your product.

This article discusses some points why you should choose transparent packaging material like glass to pack your product.

Clear Visual of the Product: Undoubtedly, glass establishes the transparency of quality. Glass, being transparent allows the consumer to get a clear visual of the product that rests inside, allowing them to assess and analyze the product, its core characteristics and attributes. This, in turn also increases the satisfaction level and makes it easier for consumers to make purchase decisions as they can easily compare the given product with other varieties and substitutes. Generally, the consumer finds those brands more trustworthy who showcase their products directly and are more likely to buy the same.

Increases Customer Confidence: Consumers are more confident looking at clear, on-shelf evidence that a product, especially food and beverage products appears as it is shown in the photographs/ads, as well as looks appetizing as well.

Helps to Identify Contamination: Glass helps the product owner identify if something is wrong with the product before the product reaches the customer. This can significantly reduce the cost associated with replacements, returns and refunds as the chances of the product reaching customers in a faulty state will be quite less. Because of less chances of contamination in the product, the customer enjoys the product up to its fullest, and the chances of them becoming loyal customers increase greatly.

Product Packed looks Attractive: It is widely accepted that the attractiveness of the product packaging greatly affects the chances of purchasing. For any product, the transparency of packing material greatly affects the attractiveness of the product.  It is in the subconscious of the customers that the product will be good if its packaging is attractive. Transparent packaging might seem more attractive than opaque food containers, as consumers are able to see the product consistency.

Fresh and Clean Appearance: Glass packaging also helps consumers gauge how fresh a product is by its appearance, rather than its use-by date. Transparent packaging can help increase shoppers’ initial perception of freshness of food and a beverage product and show that what you see is what you get. Such packaging also may be proving the point that it does not contain any unnatural ingredients or additives.

Round Glass Jars vs. Square – How to Select Right Bottle Shape? https://www.teknomartecommerce.com/blog/round-glass-jar-square-10-factors-to-compare/ Mon, 26 Oct 2020 13:13:08 +0000 https://cyprue-commerce.aphroecs.com/blog/?p=32

Round glass jars or square glass jars?

Both shapes  – round or square do matter – both in attracting the end user as well as influencing their purchasing decision. Both square and round glass bottles and glass jars have their own unique characteristics, and in no way, one is superior than the other.
To make your choice easy, listed below are factors that you can consider while selecting the right shape for packaging your product: round glass jar or square glass jar.

1. Strength of the Glass Jar:

Generally, roundness of the bottle helps equalize the pressure across the surface. On the other hand, due to uneven pressure, the square shaped bottles have high probability of getting chipped at corners.

2. Automation and conveyor handling:

Machine filling of a product in round glass jar is much faster and efficient compared to square ones.

3. Preference by end consumer:

Round shaped bottles are relatively more comfortable to hold, and this reason makes them right choice for everyone in general, and the kids in particular.
In fact, bottle holders in baby strollers and diaper bags are also designed to handle round-shaped bottles.

4. Labelling of Glass Jars:

Labeling on both round-shaped and square shaped bottles is easy, depending on whether it is being done manually or mechanically.
Applying labels mechanically on round bottles is relatively easier and consistent. If done manually it is same for both.

5. Vertical Load:

Vertical load in round bottles is higher than in square bottles, and thus you can load and stack higher in the round bottle.

6. Ergonomics:

In simple terms, ergonomics is about designing for people, with an objective of increasing efficiency and productivity and reducing discomfort.

Round shaped bottles are more ergonomic to hold than their square counterparts.

7. Cost Factor:

Other things remaining same, since round glass bottles are lighter than their square counterparts, they tend to be cheaper as weight is less.

8. Aesthetic Considerations of Glass Jars:

Square shaped bottles are aesthetically more pleasing than the round ones.
Thus, the square ones are more likely to attract user’s attention, and help customers recognize your brand immediately.

9. Ease of Use:

It is easier to scoop out the products from a round glass jar, as in square bottles, products get stuck in corners

10. For Export Purpose:

The carton size for round glass bottles/glass jars is always bigger than their square counterparts. In case of exports, volumes matter a lot, and thus square bottles are preferable.

Let us understand in detail why glass is the best packaging material over any other material:

Firstly, glass preserves original taste and quality. The product should be packed into a container, which prevents its contact with air and water vapor or moisture which can cause early deterioration and generation of unnecessary flavors and smells in the product due to resulting oxidative rancidity and hydrolytic rancidity, respectively.

The situation can worsen if this process occurs in a metal container as it will catalyze the rancidity. The only material free from these problems is glass jars. Further, these glass jars come with airtight metal caps and gas barriers that protect it from the above mentioned chemical reactions.

Secondly, glass is inert and un-reactive. Glass is 100 percent natural as it is made of materials like sand, silica, soda ash, limestone, and alumina. These materials make it inert and un-reactive which ensures that the packed product does not react with the glass in any way.

For example, if metal containers are not lacquered properly, they can rust easily which can affect the product and significantly reduce its keeping life.

Similarly, plastic pouches and bottles, especially at a high temperature can leach into the product and cause harm to the health of the consumer. Hence using glass bottles and glass jars can keep the product safe and delicious for extended periods.

Meanwhile, glass gives a premium look to the product. There is no contest between plastic/metal and glass jars in terms of looks and attractiveness. Packing a product in glass jars surely makes the product look premium and classy and greatly increases the chances of sales as it is in everyone’s subconscious that if the product packing looks good, then the product is also good. It also helps manufacturers charge a premium price for the product.

Further, the transparency of glass allows for a clear showcase of the product, which ensures the customer that everything is perfect with the product. While an original logo and label communicate your brand ultimately, but the selection of cheaper packaging material can make your brand look dull. Hence it is of utmost importance to select packaging material like glass jars that fulfill this criterion exceptionally well.

In addition, glass increases the shelf life of a product. Glass is a good conductor of heat, and therefore, can dissipate heat or cold faster than alternatives such as plastic pouches or jars. Therefore, during transit or storage when the temperature goes above the 21-degree celsius limit, the glass appears to be more viable as it dissipates the heat faster. This is possible with metal containers as well but there are several disadvantages as already discussed above. The product remains as it is in glass bottles even when temperature changes suddenly.

Another reason is that glass enhances the chances of customer retention and loyalty. In recent times, due to the emergence of DIY (do it yourself) decorations, many people have posted on YouTube and Instagram that these empty jars can be used to decorate your home or office. Therefore, the glass jars do not become useless as the product packed in it finishes but can offer additional utility in terms of home decorations.

Also, the same glass jars can be used to store things like spices, oils, cereals. Other than that, looking at these glass jars and bottles also reminds customers of the actual product they purchased earlier and increases the chances that the consumer will buy that same product again. Hence it enhances the chances of customer retention and loyalty.

Also, glass is a sustainable packaging material, which is manufactured from natural raw materials and is optimally recyclable. In fact, glass bottles and glass jars are 100 percent and infinitely recyclable without loss in quality.

In short, glass bottles and glass jars are natural, durable, impermeable, inert, un-reactive, hygienic, environment-friendly and aesthetically pleasing. This is why, as a packaging material, it is the utmost right choice – for food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries.
